The Gila Chapter of BCHNM was formed in the spring of 2001, largely through the efforts of Gerry Thompson of Silver City, NM, who became the chapter's first President.

Since that time, that chapter has grown to over 80 members and has been actively working with three Forest Service Ranger Districts; the Silver City, Wilderness and Black Range, on a variety of projects.

As of December 31, 2002, the chapter has installed a number of new gates in both the Fort Bayard Elk Refuge near Silver City and in Railroad Canyon, off NM Hwy 152 in the Black Range. Additional projects recently completed are a new section of the Continental Divide Trail 8 miles NW of Silver City between Bear Mountain and Gomez Peak. The chapter is also working on a long term project of removing 8 miles of fencing and barbed wire along a section of the Continental Divide Trail between Signboard Saddle and Reed's Peak in the Aldo Leopold Wilderness.

The Gila Chapter also sponsers a number of "fun" rides for it's members and participates in the annual Silver City Rodeo Parade in June.
